Furthermore, it was deadly apparent that whether Kurt cared or not, he knew he was onto something with his look. We knew in our hearts that, while Kurt honestly didn’t care how he looked, the people directing the music videos were able to convince him with conscientious pleas to at least let them reposition his hair. It’s like, when we were in high school, and we listened to Nirvana and wore flannel, and people like our moms saw us watching MTV and groaned about how ugly Kurt Cobain was, we were able to forgive her for being out of touch. The Wacom-tablet-wielding manchildren responsible for this chaos are, no doubt, the actual “out of touch” “adults” - not us. The phantom of genuinely purposeful spite lurks behind every artistic choice visible in Facebreaker‘s facade. We are not just saying this because we are “grown up” and we are “out of touch” with “the times”: these characters can not possibly be anyone‘s idea of attractive. We cannot stress this enough: the characters in Facebreaker are criminally ugly. Another problem would be that the characters look mathematically better at the end of a fight, when they’ve had their faces pounded in. The problem with Facebreaker is that not a single one of the characters looks better than I look at five in the morning. Yes, after six hours of exfoliating and hair-ironing, I will emerge from my coccoon with a perfect outer coating that will last approximately thirteen seconds. For a moment, before my slow transformation, I like to savor my supreme, transient ugliness - it puts the coming gorgeousness in context. In a few moments, I will take a shower, wash my hair, and scrape the mud off my face with the help of a badger-fur brush and a German-engineered vintage-style safety razor. My expensive ornamental eyeglasses throw this portrait of me at sunrise way out of focus: I am a bad Halloween costume, suspended by some sick telekinesis. From the neck up, I am a disaster area: my stubble is like hobo vomit on a funny paper plastered to a sidewalk my hair resembles a hat that a lesbian would wear. There I am, stark naked, ripped, cut, toned, buff, well-endowed. We’ll begin with a paragraph in the first person:Įvery day, when I wake up, I usually end up accidentally looking in the mirror. ![]() Anderson argues that identity is a set of imaginary features that define a certain community and its individuals. Its form that interest us most is “national identity”, a concept best described by historian Benedict Anderson in Imagined Communities (1991). “Identity” is a term that encompasses many ideas and definitions. First, it is necessary to understand a series of concepts such as “identity” and “stereotype” that will be discussed frequently in this essay. As in all cinematographic analyses, it is important to consider several factors that structure the filmic language, such as the development of the characters, the dialogues, the setting, and the soundtrack. This article aims to demonstrate how the first four Rocky films influenced the construction of a particular image of the Italian American community (i.e., people born in America and of Italian descent). This phenomenon is evidenced by the development of other Italian Americans in the series, including Adrian and Rocky’s brother-in-law, Paulie. While Rocky and Rocky II foreground the Italian Stallion’s roots, the sequels virtually erase them. Both deemphasize Rocky’s Italian American heritage. In comparison to the first two films, the plot of Rocky III (1982) and Rocky IV differs significantly. At the climax of the film, Rocky manages to defeat Apollo in agony and becomes the heavyweight champion. ![]() In the process, Rocky manages to leave the criminal world and focus permanently on his boxing career. At first, Rocky refuses to fight, but, after his marriage to Adrian and the birth of their son, he accepts Apollo’s challenge. In Rocky II, Apollo claims that Rocky was lucky in his previous fight and challenges him to a rematch. Despite losing the match by a split decision, Rocky wins the respect of all by going toe-to-toe with Apollo. While training hard for his confrontation against the champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers), Balboa begins a romantic relationship with Adrian Peninno (Talia Shire), the sister of his best friend Paulie Peninno (Burt Young). The plot of Rocky centers on the story of Rocky Balboa, a humble boxer of Italian American descent who works for the mafia and is, by chance, named the new contender for the world heavyweight championship. Most notably, Hollywood Italians: Dagos, Palookas, Romeos, Wise Guys and Sopranos (Bondanella 2004) explores the influence of Rocky Balboa as a faithful representation of the character of the Italian American boxer in Hollywood. Several studies have dissected the Rocky saga. However, an in-depth analysis of these films reveals significantly different characterizations of Rocky across the same, classic franchise. In Rocky (1976) and Rocky II (1979), the character still exhibits many of the heroic qualities outlined above. Curiously, this perception of an all-American Rocky Balboa is mostly associated with his depiction in Rocky IV (1985) rather than the Rocky Balboa that appears in the first two installments of the saga. Rocky is a self-made, hard-working, humble, and disciplined man who, above all else, loves his family and friends. 2009), the author describes Rocky Balboa as one of the greatest heroes the film industry has produced. In Rocky Road: The Hero’s Journey of Rocky Balboa Through the “Rocky” Anthology (Salyer Jr. Without a doubt, the image of Rocky fighting with the colors of the American flag and defeating the Soviet boxer Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) is already a Hollywood icon. If you polled Americans to identify which character in all cinema best represents American values, it is quite likely that many would choose Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone). However they both use the same Adobe PDF default settings specifying A4 paper size. In Word 2010 you do this via: File -> Options -> Advanced, and deselect the setting "Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" paper sizes" in the Print section. I've solved this problem in previous versions by simply deselecting print scaling in Microsoft Word or in Distiller. It's almost as if Distiller is stubbornly scaling the document to a different page size no matter which settings are specified. I've searched the internet far and wide in order to understand why, when converting a Word 2010 document to PDF in Windows 7 (via Adobe Distiller ), the top and bottom margins of the resulting PDF file are automatically increased (thereby shrinking the content on the page somewhat) despite having uniformly and everywhere set A4 paper size in Word 2010 and Adobe default PDF settings. ![]() ![]() ![]() Your callers likely hang up when they listen to the erring engaged tone for a long time. By 1925, salesmen were selling products out of 17 branch offices. The 1920’s also saw great expansion in the company’s locations. This served as a ground-breaking advancement, essentially pioneering the design of the modern ratchet, as we know it today. Joseph Johnson applied for a patent for the first ratcheting adaptor for use with an interchangeable socket wrench, in 1923. It became known as the “five that can do fifty” and soon entered full-scale production, thus Snap-On was officially born in 1920. This interchangeable socket wrench set, known for its effortless socket attachment, consisted of five handles and only 10 sockets. Johnson, along with his co-worker William Seidemann, spent hours on weekends crafting handmade socket drivers, custom handles, and adaptors. Joseph Johnson was an engineer from Milwaukee at the time and was poised to be the founding father of Snap-On tools, a company that is still going strong over 100 years later. With the increased number of automobiles on the road came the desperate need for qualified mechanics to repair said vehicles. The ever expanding American automotive market was a key player in the birth of the Snap-On tool company. Mac Tools was acquired by Stanley Tools in 1980, though the functions of both companies were kept largely separate for a couple of decades. Mac’s product line expanded over the decades to include a wealth of hand tools, as well as numerous power tools, both a pneumatic and battery-powered design.Īs production continued, the company established a mobile sales presence with the belief that tools were best sold when presented to consumers at their place of business. In 1968, the company officially rebranded itself Mac Tools, thereby dropping the manufacturer’s earlier Mac Allied Tools moniker. The company gained valuable government contracts during WWII, and the addition of a new socket/ratchet related division, known as Clinton Tools, all of which contributed to the early growth of the company. Initially this company was known as the Mechanics Tool and Forge Company, and grew out of a single facility located in the state of Ohio. Seeing the unfulfilled, seven business acquaintances joined together forming a premium tool company on their own. This led consumers to be hungry for quality tools, the likes of which would allow them to work tirelessly on their beloved automobiles. Mac Tools’ history dates back to 1938, at which time the American automotive industry was thriving beyond imagination. The following is a brief history of both Mac and Snap-On’s rise to prominence within the world of power tools. But it sure is a hell of a good time to shoot a lot of people all the same. Deathloop doesn't excel as an out-and-out shooter, its turning circle and aim assist can feel sluggish in a way that Wolfenstein doesn't, for example – a series the studio has collaborated with MachineGames on in the past. To stand rooted in place as you storm toward them with an SMG that heals you gripped in one hand and a hand-cannon that fires explosive rounds in the other. To have their necks snapped over, and over, and over again. To be whipped out of windows with telekinesis. No matter how much reading of discarded notes you do, you won't get a real sense of why hundreds of masked Eternalists flocked to the island to escape the passage of time, why the Visionaries invested so much of themselves in preserving the loop, or how any of them live their lives in Deathloop's four dreamy technicolor districts. Blackreef doesn't feel fleshed out in the way Dunwall and Karnaca did. What Arkane has built here in Deathloop is a multifaceted puzzle box. Blackreef is less a playground and more of a smartly-designed hedge maze there's only one exit and, every time that you die, you're put back at the entrance the story it wants to convey is one of escape and everything you do is in service of that. Deathloop has a different agenda to Dishonored and Prey. When I said before that Blackreef felt artificial, that isn't necessarily a criticism. The steady acquisition of knowledge is a more powerful weapon than any gun or power in Deathloop.Īnd it's all a lot of fun. You'll work out where the Visionaries reside, the fastest routes to confront them, and, eventually, ways to encourage multiple targets to reside in a single location. Gradually, you'll discover how to retain your favorite weapons and awesome supernatural powers, even after dying. That is key, because consistency allows you to internalize enemy placements and begin to use them to your advantage. Deathloop is less concerned about delivering a coherent lived-in world, with Arkane focusing its energy instead on building something that is consistent. And I promise that you're going to enjoy it. ![]() Truth be told, you're going to die a lot. What we have in Blackreef is four creative, finely-crafted sets – each dressed to be seen during four periods of a single day – that are both self-contained and persistently tracking progress in what will at times feel like an impossible task: to assassinate eight targets in a single day, or die trying.Īnd you're going to die. Your main point of interaction with its patchwork of spaces is through the barrels of some beautifully rendered weaponry. Blackreef might be Arkane's most artificial world yet. Net of its missteps, however, Deathloop remains a memorable work, a jumble of style and creativity probably destined to become an instant cult. It's exciting then to see the studio try something different with Deathloop. Even on the playful side, not everything works perfectly, especially due to an artificial intelligence that is not very reactive and too erratic. First of all, a surprisingly lazy and anticlimatic conclusion, which ends up revealing some evident gaps in the script. Deathloop is a unique game of its kind, which unfortunately is torn from excellence by some rather important flaws. The result of the studio's latest creative challenge is a brilliant exercise in game design, at the base of a multifaceted and compelling playful narrative construct, blessed with an absolutely majestic artistic direction. Deathloop is an original, visionary and courageous work, a playful experiment that returns to reaffirm the unquestionable talent of the Arkane Studios team, which over the years has never stopped putting itself to the test with ever new challenges, often at odds with the commercial logic of the triple A market. ![]() |
